We returned to nearby Tualatin National Wildlife Refuge on the last day before the seasonal trail closed for the winter. In addition to the geese and herons we often find there, we saw many white pelicans (first spotted earlier in the summer with the grandkids), kestrels and flickers, and a pair of eagles.

The view of the Visitor Center from the seasonal trail. See you next May! Pelicans, geese, ducks. egrets. and a heron – the welcoming committee. Nutria – a large invasive rodent, part of the “spiny rat” family. Cute? Great Blue Heron A different view of a Great Blue Heron. A treetop kestrel. Kestrel in flight. Canada Geese – looking at you looking at me. There were multiple groups of these white pelicans feeding in the shallows. The pelicans seem pleased at chasing off the egret. An eagle right across from the Visitor’s Center, heading out from its roost to check out the options for dinner. I didn’t notice the second eagle in the tree until I went through the photos at home.
Great shots, Alan. I’ve only seen white pelicans once and I find them to be such fascinating creatures. And I’m envious of the birds in flight!
