In December I spent a long morning with the new camera at Fernhill Wetlands, a part of Clean Water Services in Forest Grove, where they use wetlands to further improve water quality after normal treatment. The many environments they have created support a wide variety of birds and mammals.

Great Blue Heron on a gray day. This heron and egret were following each other around the water’s edge. Pintail duck. There should be a saying, “As calm as a duck.” Bottoms up! Mallard and two Teal (one immature) Mallards on a log Mallards, Teal, and Nutria Canada Goose hanging with the ducks Canada Geese in flight. With practice, I expect to do better on shots like this. A pair of egrets being watched by a heron on the pole Egret in flight Egret checking out the view Mallards (f) commuting over a creek Heron crossing the road A Fox Sparrow hanging with the Song Sparrows? Breast markings are more spotted than streaked. Song Sparrows ? Northern Flicker Immature Cooper’s Hawk ? being harassed by a crow Tundra Swans. I saw five fly over Fernhill, and I asked another photographer if he saw where they were headed. He gave me
vague directions to a farm pond a mile or so away, where I eventually found a group of several dozen.
these are so great! Love mallards on a log. FYI I clicked on an image but did not get lightbox view. that’s okay tho bc I know how to scroll : )

More good stuff in the queue. I’m not as timely as Nancy (I think she updated on our coast trip while we were driving yesterday), but I should catch up with the first week of January in a couple days, and then on to the coast. After that, I’ll have to get out and do something!
